Hertfordshire Biker magazine wins prestigious award

    Post  zx10bazza on Sun Dec 13, 2009 2:34 am

Hertfordshire Biker magazine, produced by our Road Safety Unit, has won a Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Excellence Award.

The magazine was short-listed in the publications category of the CIPR Awards and members of the team were presented with the winning trophy at a ceremony in London earlier this month.

The Excellence Awards recognise and reward best practice in public relations throughout the UK and acknowledge personal and team achievement at the highest professional level.

CIPR President Kevin Taylor said: “From over 900 entries and 145 finalists emerge 26 winners. This just goes to show what a remarkable achievement it is to win one of our rigorously judged CIPR Excellence Awards. The winners have proven themselves to be among the best in their industry and have highlighted what excellent PR work can achieve.”

The judges commented: "Out of a strong field of contenders, Hertfordshire County Council wins this category with Hertfordshire Biker. The judges were particularly impressed by the strength of the publication’s thorough integration of its niche motorcyclist readership, exemplified by its authentic passion for biking and regular consultation with bikers; and resemblance to retail biking publications in look, feel and content - to the extent that when judges opened the box, they wondered what a biker magazine was doing in there (no council branding on the cover!). Its non-patronising style and tone overcomes the unreceptiveness of many bikers to road safety messages and it has a biker following, which is growing, and an effective distribution network through bike shows, motorcycle dealers, training organisations and motorcycle clubs."

Stuart Pile, Executive Member for Highways and Transport, commented: “This is a well-deserved win for a high quality publication. Feedback on the magazine from the motorcycling community has been overwhelmingly positive, so we are delighted that our fellow campaigning professionals have also recognised its quality.

Motorcyclists represent two per cent of road traffic in Hertfordshire but 20 per cent of the total numbers killed or seriously injured. The magazine is one of our most effective tools for communicating safety messages to this vulnerable group.”
